TD offers a broad lineup of travel cards, and its Platinum Travel Visa® represents a comfortable middle ground between entry level and premium travel. Cardholders will earn TD Rewards points at a dynamic rate depending on their spending habits, with travel-related expenses generating the most points while groceries and other common purchases bring up the rear.

In addition to its steady earn rate, the card offers a number of other appealing features, including a generous introductory bonus, a comprehensive package of insurance benefits, and automotive perks like rental discounts and vehicle coverage.

TD Platinum Travel Visa® Rewards Structure

The multi-tiered rewards structure generates TD points no matter what is charged to the card. On travel from ExpediaForTD.com, which has an excellent array of airfare to virtually everywhere on the globe, cardholders earn 5 TD Rewards points per $1 spent. They’ll also earn 3 Rewards points for every $1 spent on groceries and regular bill payments, and then 2 points per $1 on everything else.

It’s important to know that there’s a $15,000 annual spending cap (equivalent to 45,000 TD Rewards points) in both the grocery and recurring bill categories. All annual spending above that amount in either category will generate 2 points per $1 spent. The cap applies to both groceries and recurring bills, but separately, so hitting the cap on groceries won’t affect your rate on bills and vice versa. Rewards points generated from spending on ExpediaForTD.com are not limited by a spending cap and neither are points in the “everything else” category.

Points can be redeemed on travel at ExpediaForTD.com or at TD’s own booking centre, and on gift cards, merchandise, and for cash back against the card statement. Prospective cardholders should be aware of the fact that the value of a TD Rewards point varies depending on how it’s redeemed. Check out our Loyalty Program Bible to get a better understanding of how to maximize the value of these points.

Other Notable Perks

  •  Sign-up bonus of up to 20,000 Rewards points
  • First-year annual fee rebate worth $89
  • Comprehensive selection of travel insurance
  • Automotive perks and discounts

To add extra value to a card that’s already solid, TD includes an annual fee rebate for the first year, plus up to 20,000 TD Rewards points for those who apply before August 27, 2018. To receive all 20,000 points, cardholders will need to make an initial purchase (+15,000) and then keep their account open and in good standing for 90 days (+5,000). The annual fee rebate is the second part of the bonus, and rebates new members the full $89 within the first two monthly statement periods.

Those who pay an annual fee for a travel credit card usually expect the card to come with some level of insurance, and the TD Platinum Travel Visa®’s coverage is commensurate with its annual fee amount. Though travel medical isn’t included, the card does offer trip and flight delay insurance, plus coverage for delayed and lost baggage, common carrier accidents, and auto rental collisions and damage. To add to the vehicle-related protection, TD also makes renting cars cheaper, by providing at least 10% off at domestic Avis and Budget dealers, and 5% off at overseas locations.

Who’s the Card For?

The TD Platinum Travel Visa® is a good fit for travel enthusiasts who want to earn Rewards points on their purchases and reduce their travel expenses, but may not have the eligible income or credit required for a top-tier travel card. The card represents the middle of the pack in terms of travel rewards, for which its sub-$100 annual fee is appropriate. Those with a higher income level (>$60K) and a 700+ credit score might instead consider the First Class Travel Visa Infinite®, which offers higher rewards earn rates and a much larger sign-up bonus.

³ Earn 3 TD Rewards Points (“Grocery Rebate”) for every $1 in Purchases of groceries or grocery items (“Grocery Purchases”) charged to your TD Platinum Travel Visa® Card Account (“Account”). Any returned items, refunds, rebates or other similar credits will reduce or cancel the TD Rewards Points earned on the original Grocery Purchase, as applicable. Fees, Cash Advances (including Balance Transfers, Cash-Like Transactions and TD Visa Cheques), interest charges, optional service, refunds, rebates or other similar credits do not earn TD Rewards Points. $15,000 Cap: The Grocery Rebate is only available to a $15,000 maximum net annual spend (“$15,000 Cap”). You must confirm with your merchant if they can accept Pre-Authorized Payments. Any returned items, refunds, rebates or other similar credits will reduce or cancel the TD Rewards Points earned on the original Pre-Authorized Payment. Fees, Cash Advances (including Balance Transfers, Cash-Like Transactions and TD Visa Cheques), interest charges, optional service, refunds, rebates or other similar credits do not earn TD Rewards Points. $15,000 Cap: The PAP Rebate is only available to a $15,000 maximum net annual spend (“$15,000 Cap”). Once the $15,000 Cap has been reached, then any further Pre-Authorized Payments made on the Account will only earn TD Rewards Points at the standard rebate rate of 2 TD Rewards Point that applies to all other Purchases on the Account as set out in your Cardholder Agreement (“Standard Rebate”).
