TD Canada Trust and President’s Choice Bank have launched Ugo, a mobile wallet. Time will tell if it’s Canada’s answer to Apple Pay.

UGO Wallet is a digital wallet app that lets you pay with a credit card loaded onto your phone and collect loyalty points from your favorite loyalty programs. You can pay using the participating credit cards you add to your UGO Wallet, wherever Visa* payWave or MasterCard PayPassTM is available. For now only TD Visa cards, such as the TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite credit card, and PC Bank MasterCards are able to be loaded onto Ugo. You can also get and redeem PC points at stores that participate in the PC Plus program when you use your participating credit card.

Additional partners, loyalty programs and product offers will be added to Ugo in the future, TD and PC Bank say.

The new UGO Wallet app works with eligible BlackBerry 10 and Android smartphones on Canada’s major wireless networks. Check here for more details.

“We are very excited to be teaming up with PC Financial to develop Ugo, the first collaboration of its kind between two Canadian banks,” says TD Bank’s Teri Currie.”Consumers carry their mobile phone everywhere they go; Ugo allows us to stay with them and is a natural extension of TD’s long history of delivering comfort and convenience to our customers.”

“President’s Choice Financial is always seeking to make banking simple and better for our customers, and Ugo is another example of good banking for PC Financial MasterCard customers,” says Barry Columb, president of President’s Choice Financial.

The collaboration between the two banks is the first of its kind in Canada. Competitors RBC, CIBC, and BMO have each gone their own way, forging partnerships with Bell, Rogers and Monitise respectively.

Rogers, meanwhile, has announced plans to introduce its own ‘suretap’ wallet, the first mobile wallet from a carrier in Canada, in the coming waits. In the meantime, Canada awaits Apple’s intention to make Apple Pay available on iphones in Canada.
