Earn AIR MILES Reward Miles Even Faster at 1 AIR MILE per $15 spent

BMO Air Miles World Mastercard Review

The Air Miles rewards program enjoys healthy demand from travellers, who gravitate toward its flexibility and the easy earnings they can rack up via their everyday spending habits. Many card issuers offer Air Miles cards, and BMO is no exception. Of the four provided by BMO, the Air Miles World Mastercard occupies a happy middle ground, where cardholders earn Air Miles at a steady rate without some of the line’s grander perks, such as VIP lounge access.

Aside from the ability to collect miles from purchases, travellers appreciate that the card is accompanied by a strong insurance package, which isn’t offered with lower-tier Air Miles cards. They also earn miles at an accelerated rate by using the card at Shell stations across Canada, by renting cars at National and Alamo, and for making purchases at Air Miles partners. For a $99 annual fee, the BMO Air Miles World card represents a quality, no-frills bargain that includes the most important travel essentials.

Basic Rewards Structure

Cardholders using the BMO Air Miles World Mastercard will earn 1 Air Mile for every $15 dollars they spend. For a quick comparison, the ultra-premium BMO Air Miles World Elite Mastercard earns 1 Mile for every $10 spent ($495 annual fee) while BMO’s standard Air Miles card accrues 1 Mile per $20 (no annual fee). Though the base earn rate differs among these three cards, one thing they all have in common is that they earn at an accelerated pace when spending money at select locations.

Accelerated Rewards Structure

  • Shell Stations: 1.25x Air Miles for every $15 spent, equivalent to 1 Air Mile for every $12.
  • National or Alamo Rent a Car branches: 1.5x Air Miles for every $15 spent, equivalent to 1 Air Mile for every $10

About Air Miles

The average value of a single Air Mile in Canada depends on where one is flying to (and from), or for which hotel they’re redeeming points. Air Miles can also be spent on car rentals, events, and merchandise. Our experts put the median value at $0.105 CAD per mile, recommending that those cardholders seeking the best deals should redeem their points outside of major cities, where prices tend to be lower. Other Card Perks

  • Add additional cardholders for $35 per card, per year
  • Purchase protection and extended warranties
  • Travel protection suite including car rental collision damage, unexpected returns home, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and more
  • Out-of-Province/Country Emergency Medical Benefits available to cardholders under age 65.

Who’s the Card For?

Sandwiched in the middle of two similar Air Miles cards, the BMO Air Miles World Mastercard is perhaps the most evenhanded: it doesn’t have the luxury perks, high income requirement and eye-popping annual fee of the World Elite, and is a step up from the entry-level benefits of the program’s most basic cards.

Bottom Line: Members need to spend around $1175-$1250 per month (for a year) to earn back an amount of Air Miles equivalent to the card’s annual fee, and that’s if they don’t make any purchases at Shell or the other locations where earnings are accelerated. This sets the bar relatively low for most cardholders.
