So Walmart Canada has made the decision to no longer accept Visa credit cards in its stores starting July 18. They just reiterated their intentions once again. Walmart will start by terminating Visa in its stores in Thunderbay and then expanding its Visa ban throughout the country if they can’t come to some type of revised agreement with Visa.
In preparation for Walmart Canada’s Visa ban, we’ve put together a list of the top credit cards from MasterCard and American Express you can use to replace the Visa card in your wallet for Walmart purchases.
While we know Walmart Canada offers a MasterCard credit card (1.25% cashback in Walmart, 1% everywhere else), each of the options below provides as much or more rewards than the Walmart MasterCard itself for purchases made in Walmart stores.
Top No-Fee Cashback MasterCard Earner at Walmart Supercenters
The top earning no-fee cashback credit card for Walmart Supercenter purchases is the Tangerine Money-Back credit card. With no annual fee, it offers 2% cashback in 2 categories of your choice (3 if you direct your cashback to a Tangerine savings account). For a limited time you get 4% cashback in your selected categories for the first 90 days, with no limits. You get 1% cashback everywhere else.
What makes this cashback card really special is that you can choose groceries as one of your categories, and Walmart Supercenters are apparently included as a merchant in that category. That means you’ll 2% cashback for all your purchases in a Walmart Supercenter. But just beware, you’ll only get 1% at regular Walmart stores.
We also like the Tangerine Money-Back credit card because you have the choice to either automatically apply your cashback as a statement credit every month, or to deposit it into your checking account monthly. Unlike many other cashback credit cards Canada has to offer, you don’t have to wait until the end of the year to get your cashback and you don’t have to call in to get your cashback, it’s done automatically, every month.
Top No-Fee Cashback Earner at all Walmart Stores
The no-fee SimplyCash card from American Express offers 1.25% cashback on ALL purchases, both inside and outside Walmart stores. But even more impressively, The SimplyCash card offers 5% cashback on all gas, grocery and resturants purchases for the first 6 months (up to $250 cashback)! With no annual fee, that’s superb value.
While the Walmart MasterCard will get you 1.25% cashback for Walmart purchases, it only gets you 1% outside of Walmart. Furthermore, you’ll only be able to redeem your Walmart cashback against Walmart purchases.
Top Hybrid Cashback Earner at all Walmart Stores
This card is good for Rogers and non-Rogers customers a like. While many people think the Rogers MasterCard is only good for cashback on Rogers purchases, not so. You can redeem your cashback against any expenses on your credit card statement.
The Rogers MasterCard offers 1.75% cashback on ALL purchases, inside and outside Walmart stores. It comes with no annual fee in the first year for all new cardholders, and no annual fee every so long as you add a Rogers bill for pre-authorized payment by your Rogers credit card. It also comes with a $35 welcome bonus, so even if you have to pay the low annual fee of $29 in the second year, it’s virtually paid for, making the card free for at least 2 years, Rogers customer or not.
One of the special benefits of this card is that it is 1 of 3 credit cards in Canada not to charge a foreign transaction on non-Canadian dollar purchases. So if you shop online or travel over the border occasionally, not only will you get 1.75% cashback, you’ll also save 2.5% on foreign transaction fees!
Top Travel Credit Cards for Walmart Stores
If you’re one of the Walmart shoppers that uses their Avion, Aventura, or Aeroplan Visa cards at Walmart you have a couple of different choices. You can find a replacement for those cards that you’ll only use at Walmart, but continue using those cards everywhere else. Or you can send your Visa to the back of your wallets and try a travel card from MasterCard or American Express.
If you have a family, you might want to try the WestJet World Elite MasterCard. We say that because it offers a couple of benefits we think are uniquely suited to benefiting families. It offers free first checked bags for the primary cardholder and up to 8 travelling companions. At $25 per checked bag, a family of four can save $100 each way!
The WestJet World Elite MasterCard also offers a companion voucher every year. For a mere $99, you can buy a return ticket for your companion that will take you anywhere in North America. Westjet’s now expanded the program to include destination to Mexico, Europe and the Carribean at different price points.
If you’re to accumulate Aeroplan miles, you might want to try the Amex Gold Rewards card. Each point you earn can be transferred to Aeroplan 1:1 with no fee. There’s no annual fee in the first year, and a 25,000 point sign-up bonus – it’s secretly the highest earning Aeroplan credit card in Canada. You can compare Aeroplan credit cards yourself to see just how good it is.
If you’re looking for a travel card that will allow you to earn 2% on all your Walmart spend, take a look at the MBNA Rewards World Elite MasterCard or the BMO World Elite MasterCard.
Top Credit Card For Walmart Stores If You Have Bad Credit
Not everyone has good credit. Unfortunately, many people who have impaired credit are only left with secured credit card options. Ideally, you don’t want to tie up your cash as a security against your credit card spend. There are some new Canadian MasterCard players that will give you an unsecured credit card for bad credit (with a low credit limit to start), even if you’ve recently been through a bankruptcy or consumer proposal. Just remember to use the credit card to pay for your goods and rebuild your credit history and credit score. Pay your bill off at the end of the month in its entirety!
